Hypnosis instead of pain killers?

There is a great article in ODE magazine about Replacing Pain Killers with Hypnosis.  They look specifically at a person having a tooth removed with only hypnosis.  They then go on to explain how hypnosis works for people to stay comfortable without medication.

Increasingly, dentists, physicians and surgeons are using hypnosis to replace, or at least reduce, the use of painkillers as well as general and local anesthetics. Hypnosis may not be the method of choice for major operations, but for a growing number of procedures ranging from kidney stone fragmentation to minor surgery to childbirth it has proved an effective alternative to conventional sedatives and analgesics. Hypnosis is real, says psychiatrist David Spiegel, a professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the Stanford University School of Medicine. It’s no less palpable an analgesic than medication.

New York Times Article

on The Possibilities in Hypnosis, Where the Patient has Power.

This is a nice article explaining what hypnosis is and how it can help people with many different issues.

In effect, hypnosis is the epitome of mind-body medicine. It can enable the mind to tell the body how to react, and modify the messages that the body sends to the mind. It has been used to counter the nausea of pregnancy and chemotherapy; dental and test-taking anxiety; pain associated with surgery, root canal treatment and childbirth; fear of flying and public speaking; compulsive hair-pulling; and intractable hiccups, among many other troublesome health problems.

Enjoy the read and open your mind to the power of hypnosis!

How does Hypnosis work?

Here is another interesting article about hypnosis. The Truth and the Hype of Hypnosis.

There was a cool article in the BBC News about a man who hypnotized himself for an operation on his hand.  This man had been practicing hypnosis for many years, so was able to do this himself for this operation.  I have heard of others who have used hypnosis for different medical procedures using hypnosis, but typically with hypnotherapists there to guide them.

The great thing about birth is it is a natural thing that your body does, so it is an ideal situation to use hypnosis.  With Hypnobabies, moms learn to get themselves into deep self hypnosis in 3 seconds using the finger drop technique.

If hypnosis can work for operations, then of course it can work for birth!
