I helped to do a showing of this movie at Belly Sprout and the proceeds went to ICAN. It was great to have a gathering of women and men who were interested in seeing this show. I think everyone enjoyed watching Orgasmic Birth, which showed some very nice births.
I know that birth can be enjoyable. I had a comfortable, enjoyable birth with Bryson. I think it was because I was confident, I had no fear and I had a lot of tools and support. I used Hypnobabies to help get rid of the fear and to stay relaxed and calm during the birth. But I was able to stay focused and calm. I had a wonderful feeling of joy after he was born. I was in awe of the experience and wanted to do it again. Really, I would give birth tomorrow if I could. It was amazing and wonderful. Sounds a bit like an orgasm to me. 🙂
I didn’t have a sexual type of “orgasm” but I don’t think that was really the point of the film. In fact I think the film was misnamed. Certainly the title attracts attention, but really only one women in the film is “orgasmic” in that sense. Rather the film was more about positive births, ones where women were in safe environments and were able to enjoy their births. Ecstatic or Enjoyable births would have been a much better name.
It would be difficult for a woman to have an orgasm if she was feeling watched or judged. She needs a supportive environment where she can relax and let go. I think in order to have an enjoyable birth it is similar. It is hard to for most women to feel supported and safe during birth in the birthing climate we have today where most women are birthing in hospitals. Where some are being verbally abused, where caregivers come and go and give routine interventions to everyone. This film reinforced the idea of the importance of choosing a supportive care provider and a safe birthing environment.
I was able to have my enjoyable birth in a hospital environment with the support of my husband and doula. My nurses and OB were supportive as well. I credit my Hypnobabies training as well to help me stay focused in the crazy minutes before I was pushing as the nurses were freaking out because they couldn’t figure out how to work the new beds and the OB was rushing in. I was able to focus on my CD and stay relaxed and calm. I doubt I could have maintained that calm without those tools.
Orgasmic Birth is a nice birth film, but I think it should have had a different name. If Hypnobabies moms who are pregnant want to watch it should be aware that it does have some birth scenes where the moms are uncomfortable, so if you choose to watch it use your Bubble of Peace! I would love to see a birth movie showing a great Hypnobabies birth. I think there may be one in Pregnant in America, which is the next birth movie I want to see!
[…] I have seen Orgasmic Birth and enjoyed it. My review can be read here. […]
I haven’t seen this film yet, but I’d like to. “The Business of Being Born” is a good film to watch, as well.
I’ve had one birth that was nearly orgasmic (I’m on my fifth baby) and it was my third–I had an epidural, but I still felt the contractions and everything, so not sure how well it worked. ) I was waiting for my doctor to answer his multiple pages/phone calls and had an attending waiting with me. She was stretching my perineum for me as we waited. I told her I needed to push, and she said, “Wait, wait…” so I waited… it was when she finally said, “Ok, go ahead and push when you feel the urge…” that it felt orgasmic. It was SO GOOD to finally be able to help baby come out, I could feel her moving out and it was wonderful.
I always say to people who haven’t had babies or to my husband, “It’s like when you have to poop, really bad, but can’t because someone is on the toilet. Then you finally can go, and it feels SO good you get the shivers… it was like that, but a lot more intense.”
I wouldn’t mind feeling that again. 🙂
